Statement of Why the Badcock name was changed to Webb
by Emma Webb Bradshaw

Moses Badcock deserted his family for three or four years (supposedly after they joined the church). Later, he came back, but he had consumpution [tuberculosis] and was also a drunkard. But the family took him back and cared for him, ("out of pity, not love"), until he died. Then, the family came back to Utah. William, and his sister, Emma, (deceased) and his mother Mary Badcock were sealed to Grandfather George Jarvis but they had taken the name of Webb when they came to this country. There was no ceremony about the change; he just used that name when he signed his natualization papers. This story is somehat different than was told at one time to one member of the family. That story said, "Grandfather found that his children were being made fun of, so he decided to change the name." No one knows for certain which story is correct. At any rate, there is only one generation back before the geneaology name goes back to Badcock, or Babcock.

The above information was given April 25, 1973 to Vilate Webb by Emma Webb Bradshaw. This official document was signed by the Notary Public.

A Mary Webb and William Webb of the appropriate ages are shown as members of an unidentified 1866 wagon company. (Pioneer Company Search) In 1867 or 1868 William moved to St. George with his wife, Sarah Dellow Jarvis. On the way to St. George, Sarah fell ill and died. In 1869 William married Amelia Jarvis. (See Amelia Jarvis Webb) Sometime later William's mother, Mary Webb, apparently moved to or at least visited St. George. Mary and her children William and Emma were sealed to George Jarvis on April 4th, 1878. See the comments on the genealogy page.
