years, Mayor of Hurricane City and Stake Missionary.
Ira Hinton Bradshaw was born 7 Aug 1884 at Virgin City, Washington,
Utah to Ira Elsey Bradshaw and Marian Hinton. He was the eldest
of twelve children, two died as little children. Ira was baptized
7 Aug 1892 by James Jepson in the Virgin River. He was reared in
Virgin City and recieved a common school education there. Later
he attended a branch of Brigham Young University at Beaver, Utah.
Ira was very active in church affairs. He was ordained a deacon
and afterwards a Teacher at Beaver. After being ordained a Seventy
by Joseph W. Mc Murrin, he filled a mission to the Central States
in 1906 to 1909; laboring principally in the state of Oklahoma.
After returning to Utah he located at Hurricane where his family
had moved to some time in 1906.
On 1 June 1910 Ira Hinton married Emma Webb in the St. Geoge
Temple. He filled many postitions in the church. Thus he was
first assistant superintendent of the Hurricane Sunday School
for seven years, also in the Y.M.M.I.A. for five years, was a
teacher in Sunday School and sang in the choir for some forty
years, having a beutiful tenor voice.
He was ordained to the office of Bishop June 24 1923 by Apostle
Anthony W. Ivins and set apart to preside of over the Hurricane
Ward, which at this time had a membership of over 1,800 members.
He held this position until Aug 26, 1928 when the Hurricane Ward
was divided into two wards: the North and the South Wards. On
this occassion he was chosen and set apart as Bishop of the
Hurricane South Ward which he presided until 1938. After his
release he was chosen as a High councelman in the Zion Park
Stake which had recently been organized from the division of
the St. George Stake. He served as a high cousleor for some five
years. At his release he was sustained as supervisor of the South
Ward Senior Aaronic Priesthood. This postion he held for ten years.
Ira pionnered the scouting program in the Hurricane area and was
very active in the Scout Program--building a scout house in the
South Wasrd and taking his truck with it loaded with scouts on
all their trips to the canyons and parks in Southern Utah.
Ira was choosen as superintendent of the South Ward Sunday School
and held this position for more than ten years.
Ira and Emma were blessed with seven children: William Ray, Hal
Hinton, Enid and Elaine (twins), Marion, Gwynn and Ira Webb.
Two children are deceased, Marion died at the age of two days and
Elaine died athe the age of twenty of a heart condition. Their
children are all honorable members of the church and are rearing
fine families and a credit to anyone and Ira is very proud of each
one of them.
In the year 1939 Ira sent second son, Hal Hinton, on a mission to
California. Also he was ordained and Ordinance Worker in the St.
George Temple and continued in this work until 1953, making some
fourteen years of service.
On the 16 Oct 1955 Ira was ordained a Patriarch by Elder Spencer
W. Kimball. He also served as a Stake Missionary for two years.
Bishop Bradshaw, as he is widely known, is by vocation a farmer,
trucker, or freighter, for many years he has trucked coal. He
served as Mayor of Hurricane City for two years. At the age of
eighty is still independent, however two years ago [ed. written
in 1964?] he had an accident with his truck after having driven
over two million miles without even a denting a fendor. He is now
retired. Ira has always made an honest living and still plants and
maintains a garden and cares for his city lot.
When Ira was twelve years old his father was called on a mission.
Thus Ira helped support the family and his father in the mission
field. He cut hay with the only mowing machine in Virgin City.
He was paid twenty-five cents an Acre for cutting the hay and
would travel along the river settlements to perform his work.
Many times as a boy he would go peddling when he had to get on the
tongue of the wagon in order to harness his horses.
Ira worked on the Hurricane canal for 16 years or until it was
finished. One day he and another boy named Jonnie Isom were
working when a large rock came bounding down the hill hitting the
Isom boy and killing him.
Ira was always a hard worker doing anything at hand that was honest
and profitable to make a living for his family. He has received
many great blessings from his Heavenly Father, is full of faith
and love for the Gospel and his fellow men. His Church and Church
duties have always come first in his life.
At the present [ed.: When this was written--1964(?)] Ira has five children
living, twenty three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
These he holds as his most prized possessions. He is just a common
man, and loves common people.
